Pastor, ChipMonk , Witch Doctor and Bigotry

I was watching this sensational video [link] and running at 2:15, I was brought back to the early 60's. I started reminiscing the Chipmunks' #1 hit song "Witch Doctor" [link].

No, I'm not kicking down a religious leeder who got lost and got carried away by 1 or more of the 7 deadly sins. I'm just writing about "Singapore's different folks getting different strokes!"

Some Singaporean kids who blogged or facebooked got charged for sedition for being insensitive to racial sensitivities. They were not asked to apologise but were arrested. [Link]

Religious leeder joked and insulted other religions and blatantly put them on youtube. What did he get? He wasn't arrested but merely apologised to get off the hook!

What did political leeder get when he shot off his mouth with words like, “Well, we make them say the national pledge and sing the national anthem but suppose we have a famine, will your Malay neighbour give you the last few grains of rice or will she share it with her family or fellow Muslim or vice versa?”? [Link]. Yes, vice versa but why do the Malays and Muslim get quoted so often. There was also the story of Malay teenage pregnancies [Link]. I just do not understand why the Malays are so often portrayed in such bad light. Can't he use another race as an example?

Why is what's spoken by a political leeder not considered racially insensitive or seditious? Not many commented on it and nobody investigates. No apology needed or given. No harm done?

Yes, different folks are treated differently in Singapore.

Maybe what is said or written to hurt, denigrate and create disharmony doesn't matter as much as Who said or wrote it.

Some Singaporeans will and some won't give a damn or lift a finger to help a person of a different religion or race. Some get a sick joy in deriding others. With the callous actions and words of both political and religious leaders of late, the "gracious society" of Singapore that's so often made into a song and dance by political leeders may be nothing but another silly aspiration, same shame like the National Pledge.

hohoho mr fish, for the past 50 yrs we actually have a witch doctor practising v bad medicine on gullible singaporeans.

without a doubt this witch doctor is the most shameless hypocrite....

having served the Japanese imperial army, he has absolutely no right to question the malays on their last grain of rice.

I shared your sentiments Mr. Fish.

Now, what exactly was our Home Affairs Minister talking, as quoted by CNA, that the OB markers are 'very clear'.

We know they are very clear, but we need to understand how those who flouted or overstepped those OB markers are dealt with, because we have two almost similar incidents but they were dealt with differently. What was the reason?

If it was a case of 'too big to touch' getting into the picture, I am beginning to believe that the law also works in mysterious ways.

Dear blogger of Feed me to the fish,

Let me first apologise for leaving my request on your comments page, as I couldn't reach you through any other way. I am a PhD candidate from the Communications and New Media programme at the National University of Singapore, and my research examines political blogging and collective action. "Feed me to the fish" came up in my sampling process and I am writing to you to seek your valued participation in a survey.

WHAT is this study about?
Without saying too much to bias your responses, my study concerns bloggers' online usage, their social networks and their participation/non-participation in activism. Whether you have participated or have not participated in any activism activity, your responses will be vital in helping me gather empirical evidence on blogging and its effects.

WHY should you help?
There has been much talk in the media and in the parliament on the rise of blogging and online discourse. But do blogging really impact civic participation? How does it do so? Your responses to the simple survey will go a long way in contributing to the nascent field of research on blogging in Singapore.

HOW can you help?
The survey involves easy-to-answer questions (e.g. Yes/No, ratings of “1” to “5”) and will take only about 20 minutes of your time. Based on your preference, I can conduct the survey via email (or any other ways you prefer). Just send me an email and I will forward you the survey form.

Please help!
Bearing in mind the potential difficulties in getting an adequate sample for such a study, I would like to stress that every single participation counts. In addition, this study has been approved by the NUS Ethical Review Committee. You have my complete assurance that all your responses will be kept strictly confidential and your identity anonymous.

I have attached a Participation Information Sheet for more information. Do visit http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/cnm/research%20students/2006_grad_carol.htm for a brief write-up of my profile (please cut and paste if the link doesn't work). Being a student with no funding support, I am bearing all research costs and appealing to your goodwill (and hopefully curiosity?) to take part in this study.

I look forward to hearing positively from you soon. Thank you for reading this and giving my request your due consideration.

Best regards,

Carol Soon

Pastor Rony Tan had already apologised. So be it. All religions encourage us to be forgiving. All those Radio DJs makes racist, sexist, insensitive etc, remarks on air regularly. What to do? Haul all of them to the police station or make the CEO of Mediacorp to apologise over primetime news is it?
